Historical Line Combinations
Welcome to the NHL Historical Line Matchups tool – your go-to destination for tracking daily fantasy hockey line combinations, forward line trends, and team deployment strategies throughout the NHL season.
This tool focuses on pre-game forward lines, as reported by beat writers and aggregated by DailyFaceoff.com, offering a consistent look at how teams planned to deploy their players before puck drop — not just what happened after the game started.
Unlike in-game line tracking tools that attempt to measure shifts and ice time on the fly, our database captures the projected starting forward lines, which are the most valuable for DFS lineup building, line stacking, and pre-lock research.
Our Historical Line Matchups tool provides a daily snapshot of NHL forward lines before each game. These line combinations come from reliable sources — typically beat reporters — and are published by DailyFaceoff.com prior to puck drop. These lines are the ones fantasy players rely on when setting lineups, creating stacks, or evaluating usage.
While lines can (and often do) change throughout a game, these pre-game lines offer the cleanest view of team intentions — helping you assess roles, usage, and deployment over time.
Note: This tool currently covers forwards only. Power play units, penalty kill groups, and defensive pairings are not included in this version — but may be added in a future update.
Select any date from the NHL season and view the full set of projected forward lines for all teams on that slate. Great for:
Use our Excel-style column filtering to isolate data by team, line, or player. Want to see how many games Connor McDavid started with Zach Hyman on L1? Or when a player was bumped up to the top line? Filter it in seconds.
Knowing who played together on a given slate is crucial for understanding which line stacks were viable — and which surprised the field. Whether you’re building new stacks or reviewing your process, this tool gives you the lineup context you need.
Want to know how a specific line performed that night? Head over to our Line Results Tool to see how each forward line actually performed in terms of fantasy production and game outcomes. You can filter by date and analyze the effectiveness of line combinations in hindsight.
For deeper analysis, use the Line Stats Tool to explore advanced metrics for each line on a given day — including shot attempts, expected goals, and more. This is perfect for understanding how well a line actually drove play, beyond just fantasy points.
Take your research even further with our Home Ice Line Matching Tool, which shows what percentage of time each forward line played against opposing lines during home games. This lets you analyze coaching strategies and see how the home team leveraged last change to get matchups they wanted.
While many tools use in-game data to retroactively piece together lines based on time on ice, shift charts, or event-based tracking, those don’t always reflect a player’s intended role. Pre-game line combinations are:
Uncover the line stacks from past slates, find patterns in top-line promotions, and build smarter rosters using historical usage trends.
Track when and where players played in the lineup — especially if they bounced between lines. Use this to identify breakout candidates or volume-based production.
Review past line combinations to assess how often players received top-line minutes, which can influence shot props, point props, and more.
Explore line changes, chemistry trends, and coaching preferences over the course of the season. Back up takes with real usage data.
