NHL DFS Line Risers and Fallers – Track Line Changes, Power Play Movement, and TOI Shifts
Welcome to the NHL Line Risers & Fallers Tool at 5V5 Hockey — your daily engine for tracking which players are moving up or down the lineup ahead of tonight’s NHL games.
In daily fantasy hockey, line assignment changes and power play promotions can create massive shifts in player value — and this tool captures it all in one sortable dashboard.
Built for DraftKings, FanDuel, OwnersBox, and best ball strategy, this tool provides insights that can’t be found by just checking box scores or depth charts.
Why Tracking Line Movement Matters
Line changes are one of the most important (but often overlooked) edges in NHL DFS and fantasy sports.
A player moving:
- From FL3 to FL1 sees a massive increase in offensive zone starts, quality linemates, and scoring chances.
- Onto PP1 gains access to the most valuable minutes in the game — power play shot volume and assist potential.
- Down a line or off the PP often signals decreased opportunity, fewer shifts, and less DFS ceiling.
Spotting these moves before the public catches up can be the difference between winning tournaments and missing cash lines.
How the Line Risers and Fallers Tool Works
We take every active player and compare:
- Today’s line assignment (even-strength) to their previous game’s line assignment
- Today’s power play unit to their previous game’s power play role
The tool automatically flags:
- Line Risers (moving up in even-strength lines)
- Line Fallers (moving down in even-strength lines)
- Power Play Risers (moving to PP1 or promoted from no PP role)
- Power Play Fallers (demoted off PP1 or losing PP time)
We took it a step further by calculating Time on Ice (TOI) impact:
For each player:
- We average their TOI when playing on their old line
- We average their TOI when playing on their new line
This allows you to see whether a player’s expected ice time is likely to increase or decrease tonight based on historical deployment.
Example:
- A player moving from FL3 to FL1 may show an average TOI bump of +3.5 minutes.
- A demotion from PP1 to no power play time could reduce their average TOI by -2.2 minutes.
